TROMPE L'ŒIL

Observing a drastic change over the past decade in Istanbul, the city where I grew up and currently reside in, really bothers me. Certain physical structures were deliberately destroyed, to change our way of life, erase our memories and eradicate the urban culture. While the silhouette of the city was constantly changing, I decided to photograph my own Istanbul.

The essential idea behind the series was to create an alternative reality. Appearances directly experienced through the senses are becoming our reality but things may not always be as they seem. Reflecting my very own Istanbul in order to emphasize the subjectivity of reality and the role of perception on reality, turned into a meditative production process. It is always an option to try creating alternatives, instead of giving in.
